Newark Airport provides a miserable experience for most travelers. It sure did for me when I got myself to the gate at 5 am only to find out that the plane had technical difficulties and would be delayed 4 hours. This is not the point of the blog. The point of the blog is that New Jersey is home to one of the larger airports in the country and operates as a small city on a daily basis. Tons of people fly in and out of the airport every hour. Every state has a large airport, sometimes even 2 or 3 like Texas, but everything is bigger in Texas. However, there is something about Newark Airport that make people let out a groan every time they have to travel out of there. The long delays, the long waits to take off, long lines at security are just a few hassles that people encounter at Newark. People often define the state by the airport and the constant traffic in and around that area; it goes along with the theme of New Jersey. The congestion of traffic throughout the state of New Jersey is always a major problem and the airport is one contributor to the problem. The airport is also a positive thing especially for our town, without traffic it is a 15 minute drive, making it convenient to get to the airport. The airport further supports the idea of movement and transportation in the state of New Jersey. Although this might not be the biggest highlight of the garden state and can sometimes be a pain, it is certainly an icon which is associated with this state.
I think while it's definitely never fun to go through the airport at Newark, it's so important to note how significant it is to our state. It's what many foreign visitors to New Jersey and even New York first experience upon arrival, and such a bad first impression may be why New Jersey has the reputation it does. I also think it's important to note that New Jersey is really a state all about commuting, and having one of the biggest airports in the country is something we should be proud of, for it gives us a stronger connection with the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Blake in Alex in that the Newark Airport is definitely an icon of the Garden State. Despite all the commotion that takes place at the airport, it serves as a great commuting area for people to travel through. Having such a large airport close by allows for travelers and out of town families to have a quick visit with their families in NJ or some of the unique places that NJ is home too. I also feel that the airport is one of the reasons why NJ is so diverse because it allows for people all over the world to come and visit or live here for a few years.
ReplyDeleteThe reason the airport is such a hassle is because of the terrorist attacks that took place in NYC on September 11, 2001. We should be proud of the fact that TSA is doing their part in preventing another hijacking.
ReplyDeleteI feel that whenever I travel through Newark Airport something always seems to be delaying the plane. This is obviously very annoying however it is easy to entertain myself by people watching. Newark Airport is a hub for many different cultures and people. You can experience all of New Jersey just by sitting and watching the people that walk through the airport.
ReplyDeleteNewark airport is convenient because its accessible to two major highways and many airlines have flights to it. I have been fortunate to not have any delays or any problems flying out of Newark. To me Newark Airport is a place that is overlooked.
